The Sd.Kfz 232 Heavy Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle was a formidable machine produced between 1938 and 1943. Although it was eventually replaced by the Sd.Kfz. 234/2 “Puma,” the 232 remained in service for many years. Upgrades were made to the original vehicle, including the replacement of the “bedstead” with more modern wire antennas. This variant was often referred to as the Sd.Kfz. 232 (Fu) (8-Rad) (Fu; Funkapparat; radio, Rad;wheel).
The Sd.Kfz 232 was armed with a 2 cm KwK 30 L/55 autocannon and a 7.92 mm Maschinengewehr 34 machine gun. With a muzzle velocity of 899 m/s, it was a formidable weapon system.
